What Doula Support Actually Looks Like

In this clip from a Women’s History Month (2025) conversation hosted by Rising Communities, Andrea—our fearless leader and founder of Nurture and Flow—shares what real doula care looks like when it’s rooted in trust, preparation, and deep connection.

She speaks candidly about how powerful it can be to build a relationship with your doula during pregnancy—not just at the birth—so you feel supported, prepared, and fully seen.

  • "We didn’t just get a doula — we basically got a life coach, a cheerleader, and a human Google for all things birth. Total game changer.”

    - Eliana G. 2021

  • "Andrea had answers before we even knew what questions to ask. Organized, thoughtful, and absolutely essential to our birth team."

    - The Ramirez Family, Oakland (2022)

  • "I didn’t realize how much I needed someone steady until Andrea and Clarice was there. They carried us through the hardest and sweetest parts."

    - Maya S., Los Angeles (2024)

  • "Andrea honored who we are, not just what we wanted. She protected our space, our choices, and our story. We were never alone."

Why Families Choose Nurture and Flow

We believe doula care is about more than support during labor. It’s about protecting your experience, reducing risks, and building a foundation for thriving—for every family, with an intentional focus on addressing disparities faced by Black, Brown, and historically marginalized communities.

  • Culturally competent, trauma-informed support

  • Birth, cesarean, and postpartum prep rooted in real-world experience

Andrea Weaver, Black full-spectrum doula and founder of Nurture and Flow

Why I Do This Work

I’m Andrea Weaver—born and raised in Oakland, a Black, second-generation birthworker, and the founder of Nurture and Flow. I’ve spent nearly a decade supporting families through birth, postpartum, and loss with care that’s culturally grounded, trauma-informed, and deeply personal.

I created this practice not just to support individual births, but to shift what’s possible in birthwork for birthworkers—starting with how we show up for each other. I want to support the kind of care I wish every family had: steady, affirming, and rooted in real connection.

In Conversation: Why This Work Matters

Andrea joined Nataly Joseph on Match Volume. for World Doula Week (2022) to talk about the power of culturally grounded care, the importance of Black doulas, and how we support families with intention, trust, and presence.
